What information is available on the application, Where’s My Refund?

Get up-to-date refund information using  Where’s My Refund? Where’s My Refund? is updated once every 24 hours, usually overnight. Refunds are generally issued within 21 days after the IRS and/or state receives your tax return. You should only call if it has been longer than 21 days.


When to check status…


  • Within 24 hours after your e-filed tax return has been marked as “Received”.
  • 4 weeks after you have mailed your paper return

  • Social Security Number, or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number
  • Filing status
  • Exact refund amount

What information is not available in the application, Where’s My Refund?


Information from an amended return (Form 1040X) will not be provided. Amended Returns/Corrected Returns, generally take 8 to 12 weeks or more to process.


If you have spent at least 8 weeks since you filed your amended return and you have not received your refund, please contact the proper customer service representative at 1-800-829-1040.


What if the refund is lost, stolen or destroyed?


Usually, you can file a claim and request that you are send a new check. This can be done up to 28 days after the date they sent you a refund. The application “Where’s my refund?” will provide you with detailed instructions on how to file a complaint if this is your situation.
